Players will build card decks featuring Hero, Vehicle, Command, and Troop cards. These cards represent characters and vehicles spanning the entire G.I. Joe line, both the Joes (good guys) and Cobra (villains). Each side has buildings and units unique to it as well.

Some of the units you can expect to find include:

G.I. Joe Heroes

Duke Scarlett Roadblock Snake Eyes

Cobra Villains

Cobra Commander Baroness Destro Storm Shadow

G.I. Joe Vehicles

Killer W. H. A. L. E. V. A. M. P.

Cobra Vehicles

Piranha Stinger

The goal is to complete missions or engage in PvP battles to defend your base and attack your opponents using your chosen team. These battles unfold strategically, requiring careful deployment and fast reactions when trouble arises. And trouble will arise, on land, in the sea, and from the air, forcing you to make good use of special defenses like mines, turrets, and troop depots.

The game’s PvP element will include an online ranking system, though it’s not certain yet whether ranks come with rewards or if they’re just for prestige.

It’s also unclear what role, if any, microtransactions will play in G.I. Joe: War on Cobra, but given the nature of the game and its card system, we can probably expect to see at least a few special units locked behind paywalls.

Card building strategy games seem to be the order of the day for famous franchises of late. Lego’s Star Wars Battles also launches this year and employs a very similar premise as War on Cobra.
